Location of the different cultures of Mexico's music |
Mexican music follows a parallel path to that of the rest of Latin America in that it arises essentially from the mixing of indigenous Iberian, and African cultures. The Spanish influence is evident through the use of stringed instruments and the survival of the decima tradition in the verses, andthe African influence appears in rhythms that resemble Afro-Caribbean ones , as well as the presence of the marimba, a kind of xylophone wich is sometimes misinterpreted as being of indigenous origin.
The indigenous influence appears more muted than in, say, Colombian music, although small bands and orchestras include indigenous flutes. Dating to the early colonization of Mexico in the seventheenth century, wich included a sizable number of African slaves, the Mexican son began to appear in various forms that corresponded to different regions.
